For tracing and identifying metallic piping and cabling in walls, beneath plasterboard, and underground up to a maximum depth of 2.5 meters, the two-part Fluke 2042 Cable Locator is a helpful tool. The 2042 has a number of benefits over standard cable locators, including the ability to locate fuses and trace conductors in soil, as well as work on both live and dead cables without the need for further equipment. In addition, it has the ability to identify conductor defects and short circuits. To ensure that the user has located the correct cable, the signal code is shown as a letter on both the transmitter and the receiver. The receiver's wide LCD screen shows this transmission code, the strength of the received signal, the external voltage, and clear auditory feedback. Although an acoustical receiving signal is an option for the user, the signal is standardly digital. The Fluke 2042 is also particularly adaptable because the sensitivity to the receiving signal can be changed manually or automatically. Both the transmitter and the receiver are lightweight and portable, and an inbuilt torch makes it easier to work in dimly lit areas. The user is equipped with everything needed for thorough, quick cable location and tracing, including two sets of test leads, crocodile clips, and probing tips, all of which are included in a protective carry case.
